Retinol under scrutiny: what does the new European regulation entail and what alternatives are there?

Retinol bajo lupa ¿qué implica la nueva regulación europea y qué alternativas hay

From May 2025, new European Union regulations will come into effect limiting the concentration of retinol in facial cosmetic products to 0.3% . This preventative measure aims to reduce the risk of cumulative exposure to vitamin A , especially in sensitive individuals or those taking dietary supplements.

This doesn't mean retinol will disappear, but it will no longer be available in high concentrations without supervision. The regulations also require the review and reformulation of existing products that exceed these limits.

🍃 What alternatives exist? The rise of bakuchiol

In this new context, bakuchiol stands out as an effective, plant-based, and well-tolerated alternative . It is not a vitamin A derivative and is not subject to vitamin A regulation. Derived from the seed of Psoralea corylifolia , it possesses antioxidant, regenerative , and anti-aging properties without causing irritation or photosensitivity.

Less effective? Gentler? The key is in how it's formulated

According to Ariadna Canals, a pharmacist specializing in dermocosmetics for Be Cherry, the challenge lies in creating complete formulas : gentle active ingredients, antioxidants, peptides, and nutrients that deliver visible results without compromising skin health. “It’s not just about replacing, but about evolving,” she explains.

Ideal-Age Cherry Serum : our real alternative to retinol

Formulated with bakuchiol, vitamin C, and antioxidant extracts of cherry, grape, and pomegranate, this serum helps improve firmness, elasticity, and radiance without irritating the skin. Thanks to its aloe vera, nourishing oils, and orchid stem cell content , it strengthens the skin barrier and improves texture gradually and safely. Ideal for daily use, even on sensitive skin.

🧴 Recommendations if you use retinol

  • Check the concentrations of your current products (>0.3%)
  • Consider introducing bakuchiol as an alternative or complement
  • Be consistent: anti-aging results take time
  • Consult an expert if you have any questions about tolerance.
