PROTECTORES SOLARES CON FILTROS MINERALES

Sunscreens with mineral filters: Why choose zinc oxide and titanium dioxide?

When we talk about protecting our skin from the sun, we often hear about "chemical filters" and "mineral filters." But what's the difference? And why are more and more dermatologists and brands recommending formulas with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide ?

In this article, we'll tell you what mineral sunscreens are, how they work, and why they can be an ideal option for your daily routine.

What are mineral sunscreens?

Mineral filters, also known as physical filters , are ingredients that act as a shield on the skin , reflecting and dispersing the sun's rays before they penetrate.

The two most widely used and approved worldwide are:

  • Zinc oxide
  • Titanium dioxide

Unlike chemical filters, which absorb UV rays and transform them into heat, mineral filters work immediately upon application and are generally less irritating to sensitive skin.

Zinc Oxide: The Broad Spectrum Protector

Zinc oxide is one of the most complete ingredients in sun protection because:

  • Protects from both UVA and UVB rays (broad spectrum).
  • It is anti-inflammatory , ideal for sensitive skin, rosacea or acne.
  • It is photostable (does not degrade easily in the sun).

For this reason, it is often found in facial sunscreens and in formulas for children or those with reactive skin.

Titanium dioxide: light and comfortable to wear

Titanium dioxide is also a mineral filter that offers:

  • Excellent protection against UVB and part of UVA .
  • A lighter texture , perfect for daily use and for those who cannot stand heavy protectors.
  • A more natural finish, especially in modern formulas that avoid the dreaded “white cast.”

Advantages of mineral sunscreens

  1. They act immediately (you don't need to wait 20-30 minutes after applying them).
  2. Lower risk of irritation (ideal for sensitive or allergic skin).
  3. Environmentally friendly , as many are “reef safe.”
  4. They offer reliable and stable physical protection even during prolonged exposure.

How to use them correctly?

  • Apply at least two fingers of product to your face and neck.
  • Reapply every 2 hours if outdoors.
  • Look for formulas with SPF 30 or higher and, if possible, water resistant .

Remember that sunscreen should be the last step in your facial care routine , before makeup.
